Although for a large part a theoretician after he started an academic career with chairs in Belfast then Oxford, Hoare was always willing to apply his ideas, perhaps in part because of his industry background. He became involved in language design, helping Niklaus Wirth [14] to design Algol W [15] by bringing in the notion of record (“structure” in C), a programming language invention of which he was proud since it brought to the data side the same kind of structuring mechanism that had been so successful, on the control side, with the control structures of “structured programming”. Algol W was a continuation and (most importantly) simplification of Algol 60.
